SUBJEKTIVE E.P REVIEW
Author: RodWhitfield (Beat Magazine) There are times when – if you’re so inclined – you’ve simply got to love groove-based metal. Especially when it’s got touches of melody flitting about throughout, it’s a genre that quite readily can get your head bobbing and your heart pumping. Subjektive are a Melbourne-based two-piece, who obviously love Machine Head and Pantera, and here on My Perception they’ve put their own spin on the style. The bone-crushing riffs, aggressive vocals and titanic fat grooves are interspersed with some nice clean vocal passages, and the occasional thrashy moments to mix things up very nicely indeed. It’s tough as nails and really quite dynamic. The songs themselves are punchy and strong, and the vocal harmonies have them sticking in your head for long moments after. Coward, especially, fairly bursts from the speakers and rips your head clean off, with the immortal line “Come get some!” howled by singer Aaron ‘Azcore’ Stevenson. The musicianship is also dead on the money, and the production job, performed by the ever reliable Ren Reich from Reich Records in Melbourne, gives the music a clean but ferocious edge that this style needs to be effective. Subjektive actually remind me very much of an Adelaide band from a couple of years back called Isaw. Australian bands seem to do this ultra-ballsy, groove-laden style of metal extremely well, and Subjektive seem well placed to grab a profile on the Australian scene. Possibly even internationally if they keep working at it. My Perception is a sensational starting point for these guys. Hoping for a full length soon. They have been gaining attention from punters, promoters, record labels and booking agencies both locally and internationally. Front man and songwriter Aaron ‘AzCORE’ Stevenson together with Drummer Luke ‘MasTema’ Beltramello both bring to the table a great fusion from playing in other successful metal bands. I was lucky enough to receive a copy to share my views. For me this debut EP combines all the right elements. It is sharp. It is well mastered, and the sound is impeccable. It makes you want more. The ‘Rock Driven Metal’ tag made me think that it was a bit on the softer side, and to my delight, it was much heavier than I thought (bonus!). I really love the harmonised guitar riffs and solos, combined with the greatly emphasised and heavy drum work. The mix between the progressive melodic vocal, and that anticipated growl and scream we eagerly await is brilliant, it is a perfect balance, and the band totally nails it. The lyrics are purposely written in a subjective way open to interpretation, to allow the listener to own the experience. However the song meanings are very much based on the everyday life experiences we all endure and are familiar with. I particularly liked ‘Watch This Space’, a song that immediately bellows the title with so much passion; you can’t help but punch the air and bang your head. It definitely made my heart beat faster. A song based on our own western cultural consumer habits, and how we destroy this world through our own waste creation. ‘Coward’ made me giggle, because I’m sure we all feel this about someone on our social media networks! You know the ones that can’t stop complaining to the screen and beyond, but won’t face you in person? Lyrics such as “Blinded and chasing, no pride I see, cause you’re spineless, negative integrity…step away from the screen you coward”. Good energy to match the lyrics. Single ‘Mental’ is already racking up heavy plays online and creating hype. Subjektive nail it to perfection in their debut release. Do yourselves a favour and check it out. www.subjektivemusic.com MYSTIC METAL E.P REVIEW |
